What PUTHAT leads to

PUTHAT means Panjab University Tourism and Hospitality Aptitude Test. Panjab University, Chandigarh conducts it for admission to Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology and Bachelor of Tourism and Travel Management at its University Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management.

Start with the difference between these degrees. A student who wants to study hotel operations should examine the BHMCT curriculum. A student interested in tourism and travel should examine BTTM. Taking the same entrance test does not make the courses interchangeable. Discuss the daily work you want to learn, then choose the course.

For a Jalandhar family comparing nearby study options, this is a specific Chandigarh route to investigate. Put it beside your IHM shortlist and university applications. Our hotel management entrance exams comparison shows where it sits; the NCHM JEE guide explains the separate IHM route.

Check your school qualification first

The 2026 prospectus requires a recognised 10+2 qualification with at least 50% aggregate marks, or 45% for SC/ST/BC/PwD categories, and English as a compulsory subject.

Check the recognised-board and category conditions in the current prospectus before paying. Keep the qualifying marksheet and supporting certificates together. If your board, subject combination or category documentation needs clarification, resolve it with the university. Coaching preparation cannot substitute for course eligibility.

The published PUTHAT pattern

The 2026 paper has 100 questions carrying one mark each, with 90 minutes allowed. It is in English and uses an OMR answer sheet. A wrong answer attracts a deduction of 25% of the question's marks.

The exam result is part of admission

The prospectus bases the merit list on PUTHAT marks. Admission still requires eligibility and the university's admission formalities. Follow the current counselling notice after results.

Treat the application as a task that needs checking. Save your login, payment acknowledgement and submitted form. Check that photographs and documents uploaded correctly, download the admit card when released, and read the examination instructions yourself. After the test, watch the admission portal for the next required action. A parent can help track notices while the student owns preparation.

For travel from Jalandhar, plan the journey after the confirmed centre and reporting instructions arrive. Check the exact venue and keep enough time for finding it. Do not assume the venue from a previous year's paper or another student's admit card.

Our coaching guidance for PUTHAT

The following is AptiGuide coaching guidance, not an official syllabus or a promised score. Begin with the university's sample paper to understand the wording and your starting point. Review each error before adding more material.

  • English: read short passages closely, revise grammar and record unfamiliar words in context. Explain why an option is correct; recognising a familiar word is not enough.
  • Awareness: make concise notes from reliable news, then revisit them. Include hospitality vocabulary and the roles of hotel departments in your preparation. Learn terms well enough to explain them to a parent.
  • Reasoning: practise identifying the rule in a problem before choosing an answer. When you get a question wrong, rewrite the reasoning in plain language.
  • Practice papers: use the published duration, transfer answers carefully and check whether avoidable errors come from reading, reasoning or marking the sheet.

Students preparing for NCHM JEE can carry over relevant reading, reasoning and general awareness habits. They should still practise PUTHAT's own paper and hospitality awareness component. Keep a separate error log for each exam so that similar subject names do not hide differences in the questions.

If you need help choosing where to focus, bring a recent practice attempt and your course shortlist to our hotel management coaching in Jalandhar. We can use the errors to decide what to work on next. You can also compare our entrance preparation options.
