What AIMA UGAT does for a hospitality applicant

The All India Management Association administers the Under Graduate Aptitude Test, or UGAT, for several undergraduate course categories, including BHM. AIMA provides scores to participating institutions; those institutions decide their admission cutoffs and further selection. Taking UGAT does not give you a seat through a common hotel management counselling system.

Before registering, identify a hospitality course that currently accepts the score. The test category may be called BHM while the college offers a differently named hospitality qualification. Check the programme title, recognition, practical training and selection requirements together. A general list of UGAT institutions is not proof that every institution on it offers hotel management.

Test eligibility and college eligibility are separate

AIMA states that the minimum qualification is 10+2 or equivalent from a recognised board. Students appearing in or having appeared in that examination can also apply. Its FAQ states that there is no age bar for taking UGAT.

The admitting institution sets its own conditions. Confirm whether your board result, subjects and other course requirements are acceptable there. An institution may also use the UGAT score for further screening before an admission decision. Keep its written requirements with your application record so that you can distinguish taking the test from qualifying for the course.

The BHM paper adds service and scientific aptitude

The 2026 official structure is a paper-based, objective multiple-choice test. BHM candidates take the following sections. Together they contain 180 questions across 3 hours.

SectionQuestions
English Language40
Numerical and Data Analysis30
Reasoning and Intelligence30
General Knowledge30
Service Aptitude25
Scientific Aptitude25

The common sections occupy 2 hours, followed by 1 hour for the additional BHM sections. The prospectus says each question carries 1 mark and wrong answers attract negative marking. It does not specify the deduction in the reviewed instructions. Check the current notice rather than assuming a penalty.

Answers go on a separate machine-scanned answer sheet. Practise reading the question number and marking the corresponding oval carefully. The prospectus says an answer option, once darkened, cannot be changed. Follow the current admit-card instructions for reporting time and permitted writing materials.

Verify acceptance for the exact hospitality programme

A concrete example is VM Salgaocar Institute of International Hospitality Education, which appears in AIMA's 2026 list. Its own admissions page lists B.Sc. International Hospitality Management and B.Sc. Culinary Arts and accepts valid UGAT or NCHMCT-JEE scores in place of its written entrance test. A personal interview remains part of final selection.

That example shows why course-level checking matters. Ask your chosen institution whether it accepts the current UGAT score for your chosen programme, whether a separate application is required and what happens after the score. AIMA itself advises candidates to reconfirm acceptance before applying. Do not treat an older institution list as a permanent admission promise.

Practise the full hospitality paper

This is AptiGuide coaching guidance, not an official topic-wise syllabus. Use the published sections to organise practice. For English, work on reading accurately, sentence meaning and vocabulary in context. For numerical and data analysis, revise arithmetic and explain what a table or chart is showing before calculating.

In reasoning, record the rule that supports your chosen option. For general knowledge, connect news events with the people, places and organisations involved. Review mistakes by cause: misunderstood language, missing knowledge, weak calculation or a rushed choice. That tells us what the next practice session should address.

Do not skip the hospitality additions because another UGAT preparation resource focuses on BBA. Discuss service situations by identifying the person's concern, a practical response and when a supervisor is needed. Revise school science concepts you struggle to explain clearly, then use suitable practice questions to check understanding.

Use paper practice alongside timed tests so that answer-sheet habits become reliable. Review the service and scientific sections as seriously as the common sections. Avoid filling an uncertain answer merely because the session is ending: the published pattern includes negative marking.
