Your Child Is Competing Globally: Build Evidence, Not Anxiety
If your child is in Class 11 or college and every conversation now includes “international exposure,” it is easy to spend on random programmes. Global readiness is simpler to define: strong academic foundations, proof of work, communication and a route that is legal and financially sensible.
Global does not automatically mean leaving India
A student can build internationally legible work from India, join a global team, study abroad, enter research or work in a cross-border function. The decision should begin with the kind of work and the economics, not with a country name.
Six routes that make a profile legible beyond one city
Each path includes the degree base, institutions, proof, employer targets and the trade-off families should discuss before spending.
01Global Data and Software TeamsBuild technical work that can be evaluated through code and shipped across locations.+
Take CS, engineering, mathematics or a rigorous conversion route, then build public projects and internships.
IITs, IIITs, BITS, strong state colleges, NPTEL and credible computing programmes.
Degree plus programming, systems, Git and role-specific projects. Communication is part of the technical profile.
Anshul's counselling observation: Rs. 6 to 12 LPA at Indian entry; Rs. 18 to 40 LPA after 4 to 8 years in strong product or distributed teams.
Examples to investigate: SaaS, cloud, cybersecurity, analytics and global capability centres.
Very high. Remote access increases the applicant pool as well as the opportunity.
Students who can work independently, document decisions and ask precise questions.
Remote work is not easier work. Time zones, self-management and proof standards are demanding.
02International Research PathwayJoin laboratories and graduate programmes through evidence of research ability.+
Use a strong undergraduate degree, research methods, faculty mentorship and a serious dissertation or summer project.
IISERs, IISc, IITs, central universities, TIFR-linked ecosystems and universities with active labs.
Research methods, writing, statistics or laboratory depth. Postgraduate study is usually central.
Anshul's counselling observation: Rs. 4 to 8 LPA in early Indian research roles; Rs. 10 to 24 LPA after postgraduate depth, with academic routes varying widely.
Examples to investigate: universities, research institutes, R&D teams, policy labs and scientific organisations.
Very high for funded graduate places and strong laboratories.
Students who tolerate slow progress, revision and uncertain results.
Training is long and funding or supervisor fit can shape the entire experience.
03Cross-Border Finance and AccountingSupport reporting, controls, risk and transactions across jurisdictions.+
Study commerce, economics or finance, then add the qualification relevant to the target work, such as ACCA, US CPA, CFA or FRM.
Strong commerce colleges plus official professional-body routes and Global Capability Centre internships.
Accounting or finance degree, professional exams, Excel or modelling and clear written communication.
Anshul's counselling observation: Rs. 6 to 10 LPA at entry; Rs. 15 to 32 LPA after 5 to 9 years.
Examples to investigate: multinational finance teams, banks, consultancies and shared-service centres.
High. Qualification progress helps, but local recognition and experience differ by country.
Students who like structured financial work and cross-border standards.
A global credential is not an immigration route or a universal licence.
04Global Marketing and Content OperationsAdapt research, campaigns and content for different markets and cultures.+
Take marketing, communications, psychology, design or business, then build measurable campaigns and audience research.
MICA, Symbiosis, Christ, DU, design schools and strong communications programmes.
Research, writing, analytics, portfolio work and platform fluency. Language skill can add a real edge.
Anshul's counselling observation: Rs. 4 to 8 LPA at entry; Rs. 10 to 25 LPA after 4 to 8 years.
Examples to investigate: agencies, consumer brands, SaaS, media and international operations teams.
High because portfolios are easy to claim and harder to prove. Show outcomes and reasoning.
Students who can write, analyse audiences and adapt without flattening culture.
Platform work changes quickly and junior roles can become execution-heavy.
05International Development and Public PolicyWork on education, health, livelihoods, climate or governance across regions.+
Study economics, public policy, political science, law or social sciences, then add field research and programme evaluation.
TISS, JNU, Azim Premji University, IIT public-policy programmes, Ashoka and development-studies departments.
Research, policy writing, statistics and field experience. A masters often supports progression.
Anshul's counselling observation: Rs. 4 to 8 LPA at entry; Rs. 10 to 24 LPA after 5 to 9 years, with sector and funding variation.
Examples to investigate: foundations, think tanks, multilateral projects, NGOs and public agencies.
High for prestigious fellowships and international organisations.
Students motivated by systems and evidence rather than only corporate outcomes.
Funding cycles, contracts and field realities can make careers less predictable.
06Global Product and UX ResearchStudy users across markets and translate behaviour into product decisions.+
Use design, psychology, anthropology, HCI or business, then build research and product case studies.
NID, IIT design schools, Srishti, MIT Institute of Design, psychology departments and HCI programmes.
Interviewing, usability testing, synthesis, prototyping, statistics and portfolio storytelling.
Anshul's counselling observation: Rs. 5 to 10 LPA at entry; Rs. 14 to 30 LPA after 4 to 8 years.
Examples to investigate: product companies, design studios, enterprise software and research agencies.
Very high for global product teams. Portfolio quality and communication are decisive.
Students who are curious about people and comfortable challenging assumptions.
Junior openings are limited, and research may be compressed into broader design roles.
The family that nearly bought “international exposure” without a goal
A composite Class 11 family was comparing expensive summer programmes because classmates were doing them. The student’s strongest interest was public health research. A local faculty-assisted project, strong writing sample and later research internship created better evidence than a generic overseas certificate. The global route became clearer only after the work was clear.
Build a globally legible profile in three moves
Start with evidence that a reviewer anywhere can understand.
- 1Choose one field and produce work with an external standard: code, a research paper, a financial model, a campaign report or a research portfolio.
- 2Verify every international programme, work rule, fee and recognition claim on the official institution or government page before payment.
- 3Build communication habits: concise email, documented work, interview stories and the ability to explain what changed after feedback.
Frequently Asked
Does a global career require an overseas degree?
No. Many global teams hire in India, and strong work can travel. Overseas study is one route, not the definition of global work.
Are paid summer programmes necessary?
No. Their value depends on selectivity, mentorship and output. A serious local project can be stronger than an expensive attendance certificate.
When should preparation begin?
Begin when the student can sustain one real project, often in Class 11 or early college. Starting earlier is not useful if the work remains superficial.
How should a family compare countries?
Compare programme quality, total cost, work rules, recognition and downside scenarios. Do not choose on rankings or social proof alone.
