10 LPA CTC is Not Rs. 83,000 Per Month

Your college says average package 10 LPA. Here's what that actually looks like in your bank account β€” the number no brochure shows you.

πŸ“Œ

The math no one shows you: At 10 LPA CTC, your in-hand monthly salary is Rs. 54,000–62,000. After rent and basics in Bangalore or Mumbai, you may have Rs. 14,000–22,000 left.

πŸ‘€ Anshul Wadhwa, Career Counsellor, AptiGuide. The salary examples below translate headline CTC into the components that determine monthly take-home pay.

What You Need to Know

The Reality Most People Don't See

πŸ“‹CTC is Not Your SalaryCTC includes basic pay, HRA, allowances, employer PF contribution, gratuity, and insurance. It's what the company spends on you β€” not what you receive.
πŸ™οΈCity Matters EnormouslyThe same 10 LPA job in Bangalore leaves you Rs. 14–22K to save and spend. The same job in Ludhiana or Jaipur leaves you Rs. 35–45K. Location is a major career financial decision.
πŸ“ŠThe Median vs. The Average TrapCollege placement brochures show averages skewed by top offers. The median student at most colleges earns 3–6 LPA, not what the headline figure suggests.
πŸ’°Start Investing Month 1Rs. 3,000/month SIP started at 22 vs. 30 = Rs. 60–70 lakh difference in final wealth. The earliest decision is also the most powerful one.
πŸ“ AptiGuide counsels students and families on salary interpretation and career-offer comparisons, in person from Jalandhar, with students visiting from Kapurthala, Phagwara, Sultanpur Lodhi and Nakodar, and online for students anywhere in India. A counselling session separates fixed pay, variable pay and benefits before two offers or career paths are compared.

Work an Offer From CTC to Spendable Cash

Do not subtract one percentage from CTC and call the remainder in-hand pay. Rebuild the offer line by line, then verify tax using the current rules that apply to the candidate.

Guaranteed monthly cash

Start with annual fixed cash. Separate basic pay, allowances and any monthly deductions. Divide only the guaranteed annual cash by twelve before estimating deductions.

Deferred or conditional value

List performance bonus, joining bonus, retention bonus, gratuity, employer PF, insurance and stock separately. Mark the payment date and the condition attached to each item.

Tax case

Use the candidate’s current tax regime, deductions and other income. Do not rely on a screenshot or last year’s slab. A payroll or tax calculator should reproduce the estimate before the offer is accepted.

Negotiation action

Negotiate the component that changes the decision: fixed cash, joining support, location, title, review timing or learning responsibility. β€œIncrease the package” is weaker than a specific request tied to the offer structure.

Evidence note: This is a calculation method, not tax advice. Tax rules and payroll treatment change, so verify the final estimate using current official guidance or a qualified professional.
