Choose the Route First

Three Ways Into Law, With Different Timelines

Five-year integrated law

Route: after Class 12 from any stream, pursue BA LLB, BBA LLB, BCom LLB, or BSc LLB. CLAT serves participating NLUs, AILET serves NLU Delhi, and private universities run their own routes.

Examples: NLSIU, NALSAR, WBNUJS, NLU Jodhpur, GNLU, NLU Delhi, Symbiosis, Jindal, and strong state law schools.

Competition: very high for the leading NLUs. Right for: students ready to commit after school and build writing, research, internships, and networks early.

Three-year LLB

Route: complete any recognised bachelor's degree, then enter a three-year LLB through the relevant university admission process.

Examples: Campus Law Centre at Delhi University, Government Law College Mumbai, Faculty of Law at Banaras Hindu University, and other public universities.

Competition: high at leading public programmes. Right for: graduates making an informed pivot or combining law with economics, commerce, science, or technology.

Law-adjacent specialist route

Route: build a primary qualification in company secretarial practice, accounting, public policy, technology, or compliance, then add legal knowledge or a formal law degree where the role requires it.

Examples: compliance, contracts operations, policy research, legal technology, and privacy programmes.

Competition: moderate, but credibility depends on domain depth. Right for: students who like regulation and commercial problem solving more than legal practice itself.

The college effect

Law has an unusually steep institution and internship gradient. A top NLU can create direct access to corporate recruitment. A less connected college can still work, but the student must manufacture exposure through moots, publications, internships, mentors, and city access.

Reframe: CLAT is not the legal career. It is one distribution channel for opportunity.

Career Map

Six Legal Careers With the Missing Detail

Corporate and M&A law

Work: transactions, due diligence, contracts, company law, financing, and negotiations. Route: five-year or three-year LLB, strong internships, corporate-law electives, drafting practice, and recruitment through campus or direct applications.

Colleges: NLSIU, NALSAR, WBNUJS, NLU Jodhpur, GNLU, NLU Delhi, Jindal, and other colleges with active corporate internships. Employers: Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, AZB, Trilegal, Khaitan, and in-house legal teams.

Salary by stage: AptiGuide's existing CLAT guide places top NLU to Tier 1 firm starts around Rs. 15 to 25 LPA, senior associate outcomes around Rs. 40 to 80 LPA at roughly 5 to 7 years, and partner outcomes above Rs. 1 crore after a much longer runway. Tier 2 and Tier 3 college outcomes are materially lower and more variable.

Competition: very high. Right for: precise writers who can tolerate long hours, commercial pressure, detail, and repeated document revision.

Litigation and dispute resolution

Work: client conferences, drafting, research, evidence, court procedure, arguments, and case strategy. Route: LLB, State Bar enrolment, All India Bar Examination, and chamber experience under an advocate. Moots help, but real court exposure matters more.

Colleges: strong public law faculties near major courts can be as strategically useful as expensive private programmes. Employers: senior advocates' chambers, litigation firms, tribunals, government panels, and independent practice.

Salary by stage: AptiGuide's AI-safe careers guide records roughly Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 40,000 per month for many fresh lawyers under a senior. Anshul's counselling observation is that years 3 to 7 split sharply based on court exposure, mentor quality, city, specialisation, and client development.

Competition: easy to enter, difficult to sustain and scale. Right for: patient students with verbal confidence, writing discipline, uncertainty tolerance, and a realistic financial runway.

Intellectual property and technology law

Work: trademarks, copyright, licensing, patents, platform rules, privacy, and technology contracts. Patent practice often rewards a science or engineering background.

Route: LLB plus IP internships and drafting. Patent-agent work has separate eligibility and examination requirements. Useful additions include technology-policy, privacy, or licensing coursework.

Colleges and employers: law schools with IP centres, IIT Kharagpur's law programme, specialist boutiques, pharma and technology companies, media businesses, and firms such as Anand & Anand or Remfry & Sagar.

Salary by stage: Anshul's counselling observation is roughly Rs. 5 to 10 LPA in early specialist roles, Rs. 12 to 25 LPA after 4 to 7 years with a defensible niche, and substantially more for partner or senior in-house positions. These are observed planning bands, not a published market average.

Competition: moderate, with a high skill barrier. Right for: students who enjoy technical detail, writing, and learning a client's industry.

Tax and regulatory law

Work: direct and indirect tax, regulatory interpretation, notices, transactions, and disputes. Route: LLB, tax internships, and strong accounting or commerce literacy. CA, CS, or tax qualifications can deepen the profile but are not automatic substitutes for legal training.

Colleges and employers: law schools with tax electives, Big Four tax and regulatory teams, law firms, corporate tax departments, and specialist chambers.

Salary by stage: Anshul's counselling observation is roughly Rs. 5 to 10 LPA at entry, Rs. 12 to 28 LPA after 4 to 7 years, and higher for scarce specialists or leaders. Employer type and professional combinations create a wide spread.

Competition: moderate, but the learning curve is continuous. Right for: students who like rules, numbers, interpretation, and detail more than courtroom performance.

Public policy, constitutional, and government law

Work: legislative research, constitutional litigation, government advisory, rights work, policy drafting, and regulatory analysis. Route: LLB with research, clinics, writing, and policy internships. An LLM or public-policy degree can help for specialised research, but evidence of work matters.

Colleges and employers: NLSIU, NLU Delhi, TISS, Jindal, university research centres, think tanks, legislative offices, NGOs, courts, and government bodies.

Salary by stage: Anshul's counselling observation is roughly Rs. 4 to 8 LPA in early research and programme roles, Rs. 10 to 22 LPA after 5 to 8 years, with senior advisory outcomes varying widely.

Competition: high for prestigious fellowships and chambers. Right for: rigorous readers who care about institutions and can accept slower early earnings than corporate law.

Legal operations and legal technology

Work: contract systems, knowledge management, compliance workflows, e-discovery, matter analytics, and technology implementation. Route: LLB or a domain degree, contract and process experience, plus comfort with data, automation, and product tools.

Colleges and employers: the college matters less than demonstrable workflow skill. Target corporate legal teams, consulting firms, legal-service companies, and software vendors.

Salary by stage: Anshul's counselling observation is roughly Rs. 5 to 12 LPA at entry, Rs. 14 to 30 LPA after 4 to 7 years, and higher in product leadership or global operations. These bands are role-dependent.

Competition: lower than mainstream corporate law, but roles are fewer. Right for: systems thinkers who like law but also want process, data, and technology.

AI Reality

AI Changes the Junior Task Mix, Not the Need for Judgment

Most exposed

First-pass research, document comparison, clause extraction, standard drafting, and large-volume review.

Still human-led

Client trust, negotiation, advocacy, accountability, strategic trade-offs, fact development, and decisions under ambiguity.

Skill to build now

Verify AI output, protect confidentiality, frame better questions, draft clearly, understand the client's business, and explain risk in plain language.

The honest trade-off

Automation can reduce repetitive junior work, which may mean fewer low-skill openings. Students need stronger judgment and commercial literacy earlier.

Reframe: AI does not make law an easy high-income career. It raises the minimum level at which a new lawyer becomes useful.
Composite Case

Debate Skill Was Not Enough

The situation

A student loved public speaking and assumed litigation was the obvious fit. He had never observed a court, read a case file, or tested long-form legal writing.

The intervention

The roadmap required one court observation, one contract-markup exercise, one legal-research note, and conversations with both a chamber junior and a corporate associate.

The result

He discovered that commercial problem solving held his attention more than oral argument. The plan shifted toward CLAT preparation plus business-law exposure. This is a composite, anonymised counselling pattern, not a guaranteed outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Families Ask Before Deciding

Can students from any stream pursue law?

Yes. Five-year integrated law programmes accept students after Class 12 from Science, Commerce, or Humanities, subject to each institution and entrance route.

Is CLAT the only route to a good law career?

No. CLAT is a strong route into participating NLUs. AILET, private-university exams, state routes, and three-year LLB programmes can also work, but internship access and self-built evidence matter more outside direct corporate recruitment channels.

Will AI replace lawyers?

AI will automate parts of research, review, and drafting. Client judgment, advocacy, negotiation, accountability, and complex strategy remain human-led. The entry bar for useful junior work is likely to rise.

Is corporate law the highest-paying route?

It has some of the strongest structured starting packages, especially from leading NLUs. It also brings long hours, exacting work, and intense competition. Salary alone is a weak fit test.

Sources and evidence note: Consortium of NLUs; NLU Delhi AILET; Bar Council of India; NIRF Law rankings; AptiGuide CLAT career guide; AptiGuide IP law guide. Salary bands explicitly labelled as Anshul's counselling observations are planning ranges seen across counselling and pathway research, not official averages or guarantees. Admission, visa, licensing, and employment rules can change, so verify current requirements with the named official body before acting.
