PCM decision guide · Class 11 onward

Engineering or another path after PCM?

Compare the work behind engineering and other PCM career families. Get a named leading path and runner-up, an honest note when evidence is thin, and one seven-day work sample. The longer questionnaire keeps work interests separate from practical constraints.

26 questions: 14 work preferences and 12 practical checks · Complete at your own pace · Contact details required to see results

This is indicative career guidance, never an ability test, diagnosis or admission promise. Complete the required details and consent after the questions to reveal your result.

Start with the student’s perspective

Indicative only: based on your answers, not a final decision, prediction or guarantee. Please do not decide on this alone.

How this quiz works

Each interest answer is coded 0 to 4 (Not sure is 2). Each path gets six times its primary item plus twice each of two shared items: 0 to 40 points. Practical questions 15 to 26 never change the rank. Highest score comes first; exact ties use the fixed table order below. Four points or less is a close match. A top score below 24 flags weak evidence; seven or more Not sure interest answers flag limited exposure. These are editorial rules for exploration, not validated cut-offs or admission predictions.

No marks, caste, gender, school prestige, budget or parent preference enter ranking. A parent’s answers are labelled as their view. The score weights and thresholds are design choices, not measured predictive accuracy.

For each path: 6 × (primary answer minus 1) + 2 × (first shared answer minus 1) + 2 × (second shared answer minus 1). Example: answers 5, 4, 3 give 24 + 6 + 4 = 34 out of 40. Engineering versus the best alternative is labelled close when the absolute gap is at most 4. Weak evidence or limited exposure overrides that label with an exploration message.

The decision behind the degree

You chose PCM. Now choose the work you want to test.

A family conversation about PCM can jump straight from board marks to engineering colleges. Before making that shortlist, pause at the missing decision: what kind of problems would you like to spend time solving? You might enjoy building a working system, investigating a physical explanation, finding a pattern in data or improving the layout of a place. Those interests can point toward different courses even when the school subjects are identical. This quiz gives you a starting comparison. The next step is to collect evidence from actual work.

Keep your top two results open while reading this guide. Write one sentence for each: “I want to test whether I enjoy doing this.” Avoid turning the result into “I am this kind of person.” An unfamiliar field may score poorly because you have never seen its work. A familiar field may score well because it is the only one your family discusses. The result should make your next experiment more specific, not make a lifelong promise on your behalf.

Separate the work family from the degree name

Engineering is a degree route and a broad way of solving problems. Software, data, finance and environmental work are domains that can overlap several degrees. That is why a computing result here does not simply say “avoid B.Tech.” It asks you to compare computing programmes on their actual content. Similarly, enjoying materials does not settle chemistry versus materials engineering. Read the modules, look at assignments and ask what students build, calculate, measure and explain during a normal term.

The PCM career map supplies the families behind this quiz: Data, AI & Computing; Space, Physics & Deep Tech; Finance & Quant; Research & Core Sciences; Design & Applied Math; and Emerging & Frontier. We have regrouped their work into exploration outcomes. These are overlapping directions to investigate. An emerging application such as agritech may be reached through statistics, computing or another relevant foundation. Investigate the foundation before buying into a specialist label.

Use a work sample that includes the frustrating part

A good taster is small enough to finish and difficult enough to reveal something. For computing, build a modest tool and fix a reproducible bug. For data, clean a dataset before making a chart. For physics, state a prediction and investigate why the observation differs. For spatial work, revise a layout after someone points out a usability problem. Watching an inspiring video can help you discover a field, but it does not tell you how you respond to its ordinary difficulties.

Give both shortlisted paths a fair trial. Use similar amounts of time and access to help. Record what you tried, where you got stuck, what support changed and whether you wanted to return to the task. Do not award the win to whichever task happened to be easier. A challenging activity you willingly revisit may deserve more attention than an effortless activity you do not want to repeat. Keep the unfinished attempts too; they make a counselling discussion more useful.

Distinguish interest from readiness

Your interest score is based on what you say you want to do. It does not measure your current maths, physics, chemistry or biology knowledge. The practical questions deliberately keep those judgements separate. If you like a field but struggle with its foundations, find out whether targeted support improves your experience. Ask a teacher to examine a short piece of work rather than using a single exam mark as a complete explanation of your ability.

The reverse matters as well. Being good at school physics does not oblige you to pursue engineering, and liking finance news does not establish a taste for mathematical risk modelling. Compare a representative task with the degree syllabus. For interdisciplinary health-data work, check whether learning biological context appeals to you. For research, ask whether sustained reading and uncertain results appeal alongside discovery. Use these questions to decide what to investigate, not to create another fixed label.

Make the study horizon visible

Compare the first degree separately from the training needed for the work you eventually want. A first degree may leave several routes open, while a specialist research goal can involve further selection and study. Ask what you could do if you stopped after the first award, and what additional steps the longer route requires. Do not put a postgraduate institution on a Class 12 shortlist as though its specialist programme were an immediate undergraduate option.

Professional and academic routes also need separate timelines. The architecture and planning examples here have different degree lengths. Actuarial qualification involves a progression beyond choosing an undergraduate college. A research route has no guaranteed date when it turns into a permanent job. Build a plan with review points and realistic exits. Treat scholarships, assistantships and internships as possibilities to investigate until their conditions and availability are confirmed for your situation.

Compare the complete cost with your family

Write down tuition, housing, food, travel, equipment, course materials and preparation expenses for each option. Use actual published fees when making the live shortlist. Mark uncertain costs separately and ask what happens if financial aid does not arrive. A local programme may deserve serious consideration when it leaves room for projects and support. An expensive option needs a clear explanation of what the extra spending buys in teaching, facilities, access or experience.

This quiz never subtracts interest points because your budget is limited or you need to remain close to home. Those facts change how you investigate a route. They may lead you toward a different institution, a broader first degree or a different study schedule. They do not tell us what you are capable of enjoying. If income during study is necessary, examine the timetable honestly. Do not build a family budget around an assumed internship payment or a headline graduate salary.

Let entrance exams serve a programme shortlist

Students can prepare for several entrance routes. The useful question is which acceptable programmes those routes would open. Create a shortlist with the degree, campus, subjects required, accepted admission process and official notification beside each name. Check the details for the actual application cycle. An exam website and a university’s programme rules may answer different parts of the question. Avoid assuming that a qualifying score alone guarantees a seat or eligibility everywhere.

A repeat year is another decision, not a hidden consequence of an engineering result. Discuss what would change in preparation, how progress would be reviewed, what the student is willing to commit and which alternative remains acceptable. Write down a stopping rule before the attempt begins. If the student is unsure about engineering itself, more exam practice will not resolve that uncertainty on its own. Include work exploration alongside any preparation review.

Read a close result as a useful comparison

Two paths can be close because they share activities. Computing and data both use code; architecture and GIS both use spatial reasoning; physics and chemistry both reward careful investigation. The pair note explains where the work starts to diverge. Choose a taster that exposes that difference. For computing versus data, compare repairing a tool with defending an inference. For spatial design versus GIS, compare proposing a layout with checking whether a map’s evidence is trustworthy.

The published score gap is a sorting rule, not a confidence interval. An exact tie uses a fixed display order and should be read as joint exploration. If most interests are unfamiliar, postpone a confident choice and try more activities. If your results remain broad, consider a foundation that keeps several desired routes available, then verify that it actually meets their later entry requirements. “Flexible” needs evidence from course rules, not just reassuring language in a brochure.

For parents: help the student produce evidence

Begin by asking the student to describe a task they would choose to do again. Share your financial and practical constraints clearly, without presenting them as a judgement of the student’s ability. If you answer this quiz alone, the result records your perspective. Ask the student to answer separately before comparing. A disagreement can reveal different exposure, assumptions or worries; it does not require one person to be declared right immediately.

Agree a modest exploration plan and a date to discuss what was learned. Offer help finding a safe taster, reading a syllabus or speaking to a current student. Ask professionals about routine responsibilities, awkward parts of the job and the preparation they actually use. Keep salaries out of this first conversation unless there is a credible, relevant source. Later, compare verified costs and employment evidence for the actual institutions under consideration.

Bring a concrete question to counselling

Bring the top two result cards, your taster notes, school subjects, any readiness concerns and a funding ceiling. Add the programmes you have checked and the official rules that remain unclear. A useful question might be: “I enjoyed the data exercise more than debugging, but I need an affordable local degree. Which foundations should I compare?” That gives a counsellor something specific to investigate with you.

If engineering remains the strongest option, continue with the engineering-branch quiz. If another family leads, use its full card and linked guides to compare degree routes. In either case, keep the final decision attached to a real programme, a verified admission route, a manageable cost and work you have made a serious attempt to understand.

Compare the routes before the institutions

These are exploration families. Degrees overlap; every programme needs a separate eligibility check.

Study horizon and closest comparison
PathDegree and study horizonWork comparison
Engineering & physical systemsB.E./B.Tech is commonly a four-year route. Some integrated programmes are longer. Compare the actual branch syllabus and laboratory access.Against physics research: engineering asks how to make a system meet a specification; physics asks how well an explanation accounts for observations. Both can use maths, code and experiments.
Computing, software & cybersecurityCompare B.Sc Computer Science or BCA routes, commonly three or four years depending on the university, with a four-year B.Tech. Verify the award, exit options and postgraduate requirements of each programme.Against data and statistics: computing centres on making a tool reliable; data work centres on whether an inference from the data is justified. Try building an app and analysing a dataset separately.
Data, statistics & mathematical modellingB.Stat at ISI is a three-year example. B.Sc/BS mathematics, statistics or data programmes may take three or four years. Specialist research may involve further study; verify the particular route.Against quant and actuarial work: statistics can serve many domains; quant and actuarial routes commit more of the modelling to financial risk. A finance label should not substitute for enjoying probability.
Quant, actuarial & financial riskA mathematics or statistics undergraduate degree, often three or four years, can be a foundation. Actuarial professional exams are a separate progression with no guaranteed completion time; specialised quant study may extend the route.Against economics and operations: financial risk focuses on uncertainty in money and contracts; economics and operations can examine prices, policy, queues and resource allocation without pursuing actuarial qualification.
Economics, operations & business decisionsConsider BA Economics or a mathematics/statistics degree with suitable electives, commonly three or four years. Operations research specialisation may come later; an engineering route is also possible.Against data and statistics: both use evidence, but this family starts with an economic or operational decision. Data study can give broader statistical foundations when the application domain is still undecided.
Physics, space & scientific researchCompare B.Sc/BS physics routes, often three or four years, and the five-year IISER BS-MS. Research careers may require postgraduate or doctoral work beyond the first degree; there is no fixed time to a research job.Against engineering: scientific research prizes a defensible explanation; engineering also has to deliver a system under practical specifications. Research labs can employ engineers, so this is a work preference, not a wall between degrees.
Chemistry, materials & laboratory scienceConsider B.Sc/BS chemistry, often three or four years, or an IISER BS-MS over five years. Materials specialisation and research roles may require further study. Compare this with engineering if you prefer plant or process design.Against physics research: chemistry foregrounds composition, reactions and analytical methods; physics foregrounds physical laws and models. Materials science overlaps both, so compare actual modules before choosing.
Architecture, planning & spatial designAt SPA Delhi, B.Arch is five years and B.Planning is four years. They are different awards; verify the exact programme elsewhere. Do not confuse architectural study with automatic professional registration.Against climate and GIS: spatial design proposes and negotiates changes to places; GIS and climate work often analyse evidence about places. Both use maps, but the output and training can differ.
Climate, GIS & environmental analyticsA physics, statistics, geography or suitable geoinformatics degree may provide a foundation, commonly three or four years. Specialist postgraduate routes vary. IIRS remote-sensing study cited here is postgraduate, not a direct Class 12 course.Against spatial design: climate and GIS investigate patterns and evidence; architecture and planning focus more on shaping places and their use. A strong map can support both kinds of work.
Bioinformatics & health-data researchCompare the exact statistics, computing or science award and its duration, including any fourth-year or postgraduate requirements. IIIT Hyderabad's CND is a five-year dual degree: B.Tech in Computer Science and MS in Computational Natural Sciences by Research. It is an engineering route.Against data and statistics: health-data work needs biological or clinical context as well as statistical discipline. Broad statistics preserves more domains if the biology interest is still uncertain.

Explore every path

You can read every result without taking the quiz. These routes draw on the six groups in the PCM career map. No salary figures or admission promises are made.

Engineering & physical systems

Map group: Data, AI & Computing / Space, Physics & Deep Tech / Emerging & Frontier

What this path involves

Build and test systems that must work under real constraints: a circuit, machine, energy installation or production process. This includes the map’s robotics, renewable energy, semiconductor, defence and product-engineering directions. Choosing this family still leaves the branch, college and cost decision open.

Who it may suit

You want to turn physics or technical ideas into working things, measure failures and improve a design. Check whether you enjoy the technical work itself, even when a prototype refuses to cooperate.

Degree and years

B.E./B.Tech is commonly a four-year route. Some integrated programmes are longer. Compare the actual branch syllabus and laboratory access.

Entry routes

JEE Main Paper 1 is an engineering entry route at participating institutions. IIT engineering admission uses the applicable JEE Advanced and counselling process. Other IIT awards can have different entry routes. Check the current programme eligibility and counselling rules separately from exam eligibility.

Computing, software & cybersecurity

Map group: Data, AI & Computing / Design & Applied Math / Emerging & Frontier

What this path involves

Build dependable software, data pipelines, games or security tools. The map’s data engineering, cybersecurity, game simulation and blockchain work belong here. A computing interest does not by itself settle B.Tech versus a non-engineering computing degree.

Who it may suit

You enjoy debugging, testing edge cases and returning to a problem after the exciting first draft. Security exploration belongs in authorised practice environments, never someone else’s account or network.

Degree and years

Data, statistics & mathematical modelling

Map group: Data, AI & Computing / Research & Core Sciences

What this path involves

Ask a useful question, inspect the evidence and explain uncertainty. This brings together the map’s data analytics, statistics academia, applied mathematics and learning analytics. Mathematical research is a deeper branch to investigate if proofs appeal more than dashboards.

Who it may suit

You enjoy probability, patterns and checking whether an attractive conclusion survives a changed assumption. You are willing to clean messy data and explain a limitation in ordinary language.

Degree and years

B.Stat at ISI is a three-year example. B.Sc/BS mathematics, statistics or data programmes may take three or four years. Specialist research may involve further study; verify the particular route.

Entry routes

ISI has its own admission process; CUET or university routes apply elsewhere. Check mathematics subject requirements and the current official notification rather than assuming every PCM student qualifies.

Illustrative institutions

ISI for statistics and mathematics; University of Delhi colleges for statistics or mathematics. These are examples, verify current status and programme-specific requirements.

Closest alternative

Against quant and actuarial work: statistics can serve many domains; quant and actuarial routes commit more of the modelling to financial risk. A finance label should not substitute for enjoying probability.

For dates and eligibility, check the current official notification. These job titles are examples to investigate, not promised vacancies; some need further study or experience.

Skills to build

Quant, actuarial & financial risk

Map group: Finance & Quant

What this path involves

Model uncertainty in insurance, lending or markets. The map’s actuarial science, risk modelling, quantitative finance and financial engineering sit here. These are related directions, not interchangeable qualifications or guaranteed first jobs.

Who it may suit

You like probability and disciplined model checking, can explain a loss as clearly as a gain, and are curious about the financial assumptions. Actuarial study also asks whether you want an ongoing professional-exam commitment.

Degree and years

A mathematics or statistics undergraduate degree, often three or four years, can be a foundation. Actuarial professional exams are a separate progression with no guaranteed completion time; specialised quant study may extend the route.

Entry routes

Use the chosen degree’s admission route. For IAI student membership, check ACET and the current non-ACET criteria on the official IAI portal. Passing an entry step is not the same as qualifying as an actuary.

Illustrative institutions

ISI or University of Delhi for mathematical foundations; Institute of Actuaries of India for the professional route, not a college degree. These are examples, verify current status and eligibility.

Closest alternative

Against economics and operations: financial risk focuses on uncertainty in money and contracts; economics and operations can examine prices, policy, queues and resource allocation without pursuing actuarial qualification.

For dates and eligibility, check the current official notification. These job titles are examples to investigate, not promised vacancies; some need further study or experience.

Skills to build

  • Probability and calculus
  • Spreadsheet modelling and Python
  • Financial statements and risk explanations

First 90 days

  • Days 1-30: model a simple insurance pool using invented numbers; vary assumptions and explain who carries the risk.
  • Days 31-60: try official sample material and track whether you enjoy repeated problem practice, not just finance news.
  • Days 61-90: compare degree and professional-exam costs separately; interview a student about the workload before committing.

What to ask a counsellor

  • Would I still like this path without a prestigious finance title?
  • What is my plan if professional exams take longer than expected?
  • Which roles can I explore while building mathematical depth?

Economics, operations & business decisions

Map group: Finance & Quant / Research & Core Sciences / Design & Applied Math

What this path involves

Use quantitative thinking to understand choices and allocate resources. This combines econometrics, operations research, supply-chain analytics and product or investment analysis from the map. The common thread is explaining a decision and its trade-offs.

Who it may suit

You want to know why a queue forms, a price changes or a delivery route wastes time. You can tolerate imperfect information and want to discuss findings with people who must act on them.

Degree and years

Consider BA Economics or a mathematics/statistics degree with suitable electives, commonly three or four years. Operations research specialisation may come later; an engineering route is also possible.

Entry routes

CUET at participating universities or institution-specific admission may apply. Verify programme-level mathematics and subject-combination rules. An MBA is a later choice, not an automatic requirement for this exploration.

Illustrative institutions

University of Delhi colleges for economics or quantitative foundations; ISI for later quantitative study where eligible. These are examples, verify current status and the level of each programme.

Closest alternative

Against data and statistics: both use evidence, but this family starts with an economic or operational decision. Data study can give broader statistical foundations when the application domain is still undecided.

For dates and eligibility, check the current official notification. These job titles are examples to investigate, not promised vacancies; some need further study or experience.

Skills to build

  • Graphs, statistics and causal reasoning
  • Spreadsheets and optimisation

  • Product analyst
  • Investment research assistant

First 90 days

  • Days 1-30: map a familiar queue or delivery process without collecting personal information; identify its bottleneck.
  • Days 31-60: compare two possible changes in a spreadsheet and explain what your model leaves out.
  • Days 61-90: read economics and operations course outlines; ask a professional which parts of the job involve analysis versus coordination.

What to ask a counsellor

  • Do I want to understand economic behaviour or optimise a process?
  • Which undergraduate options preserve both possibilities?
  • Can I explain a model to a non-technical decision-maker?

Physics, space & scientific research

Map group: Space, Physics & Deep Tech / Research & Core Sciences

What this path involves

Investigate how physical systems behave, using theory, experiments or simulation. Physics research, astrophysics, photonics, quantum computing and scientific computing from the map sit here. A space interest can lead toward research or engineering; the work sample matters.

Who it may suit

You keep asking why an observation happened and enjoy a derivation even before it has a product application. You can imagine reading, testing and revising an explanation over a sustained period.

Degree and years

Compare B.Sc/BS physics routes, often three or four years, and the five-year IISER BS-MS. Research careers may require postgraduate or doctoral work beyond the first degree; there is no fixed time to a research job.

Entry routes

IISER admission uses its current IAT process for listed programmes; other universities may use CUET or their own route. Check each programme’s current rules. Do not use obsolete exam names from older career maps.

Illustrative institutions

IISER campuses for BS-MS science; University of Delhi for undergraduate physics. These are examples, verify current status, major availability and admission requirements.

Closest alternative

Against engineering: scientific research prizes a defensible explanation; engineering also has to deliver a system under practical specifications. Research labs can employ engineers, so this is a work preference, not a wall between degrees.

  • Days 1-30: model a pendulum or orbit in a simulation; state the simplifying assumptions before plotting.
  • Days 31-60: compare the prediction with a safe classroom observation or published dataset and explain the mismatch.
  • Days 61-90: talk to a research student about a normal week and compare funding, study duration and exit options across programmes.

What to ask a counsellor

  • Is my interest in space actually an interest in physics, hardware or imagery?
  • What would I study before the specialist research stage?
  • How will I support myself if postgraduate study takes longer?

Chemistry, materials & laboratory science

Map group: Research & Core Sciences / Emerging & Frontier

What this path involves

Study composition, properties and change, then connect those observations to quality, materials or research problems. The map’s analytical chemistry and materials science are the anchors. Process engineering is a neighbouring route with a different degree focus.

Who it may suit

Chemistry is the part of PCM you want to keep studying. You can follow procedures, record inconvenient observations and work patiently with measurements rather than treating practicals as a box to tick.

Degree and years

Consider B.Sc/BS chemistry, often three or four years, or an IISER BS-MS over five years. Materials specialisation and research roles may require further study. Compare this with engineering if you prefer plant or process design.

Entry routes

CUET, the IISER IAT route for listed programmes, or university admission processes may apply. Check laboratory requirements and subject eligibility in the current official notification.

Illustrative institutions

Architecture, planning & spatial design

Map group: Design & Applied Math

What this path involves

Think about the spaces people use and how places function. Architecture and urban or transport planning are separate routes within this result. Drawing a building, planning a neighbourhood and analysing a transport network involve different responsibilities.

Who it may suit

You enjoy spatial reasoning and revising a design after feedback. You are interested in how people use a place, not only in whether an image looks impressive.

Degree and years

At SPA Delhi, B.Arch is five years and B.Planning is four years. They are different awards; verify the exact programme elsewhere. Do not confuse architectural study with automatic professional registration.

Entry routes

JEE Main Paper 2A is for B.Arch and Paper 2B is for B.Planning. SPA Delhi uses the applicable JoSAA/CSAB route. NATA, conducted by the Council of Architecture, is an architecture aptitude test accepted by relevant institutions; it is not a B.Planning test. Verify the exact institution's admission and recognition rules.

Illustrative institutions

School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi for B.Arch and B.Planning. This is an example, verify current status, programme recognition and the current admission notification.

Closest alternative

Against climate and GIS: spatial design proposes and negotiates changes to places; GIS and climate work often analyse evidence about places. Both use maps, but the output and training can differ.

For dates and eligibility, check the current official notification. These job titles are examples to investigate, not promised vacancies; some need further study or experience.

Skills to build

  • Spatial drawing and measured observation
  • CAD and mapping basics
  • Design critique and revision
  • Public-space research and clear presentation

Example job titles

Example roles to research, not jobs conferred by this degree. Check each role's required qualification, registration, experience and employer criteria. Some roles require postgraduate or specialist training.

  • Architectural design assistant
  • CAD technician
  • Planning assistant
  • Urban research assistant
  • Transport planning assistant
  • GIS technician

First 90 days

  • Days 1-30: measure and sketch a familiar room; explain who uses it and where the design causes trouble.
  • Days 31-60: redesign a small space and separately map a walking route; invite feedback and record what changed.
  • Days 61-90: compare architecture and planning studios, programme length and material costs; verify recognition before shortlisting.

What to ask a counsellor

  • Am I drawn to building design or city-scale systems?
  • How will studio work and material costs fit my resources?
  • Which qualification and registration rules apply to the role I have in mind?

Climate, GIS & environmental analytics

Map group: Space, Physics & Deep Tech / Emerging & Frontier

What this path involves

Use spatial and environmental evidence to understand land, weather, energy or agriculture. This includes geoinformatics, meteorology, carbon analytics and agritech data from the map. Designing energy hardware belongs more directly with engineering.

Who it may suit

You want to connect maths or physics with real places and environmental questions. You can work with uncertain measurements, learn domain context and check a map against what happens on the ground.

Degree and years

A physics, statistics, geography or suitable geoinformatics degree may provide a foundation, commonly three or four years. Specialist postgraduate routes vary. IIRS remote-sensing study cited here is postgraduate, not a direct Class 12 course.

Entry routes

Use the undergraduate institution’s current admission route, which may include CUET. For later IIRS study, check its official course calendar and essential qualifications for the specific programme. IIRS is a postgraduate example. Match your exact bachelor degree and subjects against the essential qualifications of the particular IIRS programme and admission year.

Illustrative institutions

IIRS Dehradun for later remote-sensing and GIS study; University of Delhi for relevant undergraduate foundations. These are examples, verify current status and whether the degree meets later prerequisites.

Closest alternative

Against spatial design: climate and GIS investigate patterns and evidence; architecture and planning focus more on shaping places and their use. A strong map can support both kinds of work.

For dates and eligibility, check the current official notification. These job titles are examples to investigate, not promised vacancies; some need further study or experience.

Skills to build

  • GIS and coordinate systems
  • Statistics and data quality
  • Environmental domain reading
  • Field observation and communicating uncertainty

Example job titles

Example roles to research, not jobs conferred by this degree. Check each role's required qualification, registration, experience and employer criteria. Some roles require postgraduate or specialist training.

  • GIS analyst
  • Remote sensing analyst
  • Environmental data assistant
  • Carbon data analyst
  • Agritech data analyst
  • Climate research assistant

First 90 days

  • Days 1-30: make a simple public-data map of green spaces or transport access and record the data date.
  • Days 31-60: check a small part against safe local observations; explain missing coverage and measurement limits.
  • Days 61-90: compare geography, statistics and physics foundations against a specialist course’s prerequisites; separate field and desk preferences.

What to ask a counsellor

  • Which environmental problem do I want to work on?
  • Does my shortlisted degree meet later specialist prerequisites?
  • How much fieldwork, coding and domain science does each route involve?

Bioinformatics & health-data research

Map group: Design & Applied Math / Emerging & Frontier

What this path involves

Apply computation and statistics to biological or health questions. Bioinformatics, computational biology and biostatistics are the map anchors. This is an analytical direction, not a medical qualification or permission to treat patients.

Who it may suit

You are willing to learn biology alongside maths and code, and can see why a technical model needs biological context. If your main wish is direct patient contact, use broader counselling rather than treating this result as a substitute for clinical training.

Degree and years

Compare the exact statistics, computing or science award and its duration, including any fourth-year or postgraduate requirements. IIIT Hyderabad's CND is a five-year dual degree: B.Tech in Computer Science and MS in Computational Natural Sciences by Research. It is an engineering route.

Entry routes

Check programme-specific subject requirements carefully: PCM alone is not universal eligibility for biology-related degrees. Undergraduate university routes and later research admissions differ. Read the current official notification before applying.

Illustrative institutions

University of Delhi for statistics foundations; IIIT Hyderabad CND as an interdisciplinary engineering comparison. These are examples, verify current status and eligibility. A foundation degree does not guarantee specialist admission.

Closest alternative

Against data and statistics: health-data work needs biological or clinical context as well as statistical discipline. Broad statistics preserves more domains if the biology interest is still uncertain.

For dates and eligibility, check the current official notification. These job titles are examples to investigate, not promised vacancies; some need further study or experience.

Skills to build

  • Probability and Python or R
  • Foundational biology
  • Reproducible analysis
  • Research ethics and interpreting evidence

Example job titles

Example roles to research, not jobs conferred by this degree. Check each role's required qualification, registration, experience and employer criteria. Some roles require postgraduate or specialist training.

  • Bioinformatics analyst
  • Clinical data assistant
  • Biostatistics assistant
  • Research data coordinator
  • Computational biology assistant
  • Health data analyst

First 90 days

  • Days 1-30: learn basic genetics or study design, then explain one biological question in your own words.
  • Days 31-60: analyse a public teaching dataset with no identifiable patient data; distinguish association from a clinical conclusion.
  • Days 61-90: compare statistics-first and biology-first curricula, verify PCM eligibility and ask a researcher about the required study depth.

What to ask a counsellor

  • Which programmes accept my exact school subjects?
  • How much biology do I need to learn before specialist work?
  • Do I want to analyse health evidence or work directly with patients?

Questions you might have

Does a non-engineering result mean I should reject engineering?

No. It identifies a work family to compare with engineering. Computing, data, materials and climate work can have both engineering and non-engineering routes. Compare the actual degree, costs and work samples before deciding.

Does a strong engineering result tell me my branch?

No. This quiz stops at the engineering-versus-alternatives decision. Use AptiGuide’s existing engineering-branch quiz next, then verify branch content and college options.

Do budget or early-income answers lower my score?

No. Only the first fourteen interest statements rank paths. Practical answers generate planning notes. Funding, relocation and income needs are constraints to address, not measures of talent.

What if my top two results are tied?

Treat them as joint exploration options. The display uses a published fixed order to make ties deterministic. A gap of four points or less is labelled close; it is not a statistical confidence interval.

What if I choose Not sure for many interests?

The quiz assigns the midpoint to Not sure and flags limited exposure when seven or more of the fourteen interests use that answer. If the top score is below twenty-four out of forty, it asks for work samples before a decision.

Can PCM students enter every biological or health-data course?

No. Subject requirements differ. Check the current official notification for each programme. Bioinformatics or health-data study does not qualify someone to treat patients.

Is a repeat entrance attempt required?

No. Your repeat-attempt answer becomes a planning note. A repeat year needs its own discussion of progress, willingness, funding, wellbeing and an acceptable alternative.

How long are architecture and planning degrees?

The SPA Delhi examples are a five-year B.Arch and a four-year B.Planning. They are separate degrees. Verify the chosen institution’s current programme, admission rules and recognition.

Is the result free and private before I save?

The quiz is free, but you must provide the required contact details and acknowledgements to reveal your personalised result and download it. Submitting requests storage and a result email when online saving is configured. The two follow-up contact options are optional. A failed save does not hide an already revealed result.

Can a parent answer, and what happens when I save?

A parent-only response is labelled as the parent's view. To reveal the personalised result, complete the required contact details and acknowledgements. Under-18 or unstated-age submissions require a parent or guardian acknowledgement. A successful save confirms storage, not email delivery.
