Design Is Not One Career. Choose the Discipline Before the Degree

You know you want a creative career, but product, communication and industrial design lead to very different work. Your portfolio must prove the discipline you actually want.

πŸ“Œ

Decision reframe: Design is applied problem-solving under user, material or communication constraints. Reviewers need to see research, alternatives, critique and revision, not only polished output.

πŸ‘€ Anshul Wadhwa, Career Counsellor, AptiGuide. The design routes here were grouped by the problems each role solves, not by job titles alone.
Decision Brief

Choose a design discipline before building a portfolio

β€œCreative” is too broad to choose a degree. Product, communication and industrial design require different tools, constraints and evidence, even when all three value observation and iteration.

What Changes the Decision
Match the portfolio to the discipline

A product-design case should show user research and interaction decisions. Communication design needs visual systems and message clarity. Industrial design must show form, materials and physical constraints.

Show process, not decorative output

Reviewers need to see the brief, alternatives, rejected ideas, feedback and refinement. A polished final image without reasoning gives little evidence of how the student works.

Test tolerance for critique

Design improves through repeated feedback and revision. Students who want only unrestricted self-expression may prefer studio art or another creative route over client and user-led design work.

πŸ“ AptiGuide counsels students on UX, product and visual-design career choices, in person from Jalandhar, with students visiting from Kapurthala, Phagwara, Sultanpur Lodhi and Nakodar, and online for students anywhere in India. In a session, creative interests are compared with research, systems thinking and portfolio demands before a design route is chosen.

Four Design Careers With Different Entry Evidence

Design is not a single creative degree. Each branch asks for a different portfolio, toolset and relationship with users or manufacturing.

UX and product design

Entry route: Learn user research, interaction design, prototyping, accessibility and product reasoning.

Colleges and preparation: NID, IIT design routes, Srishti Manipal and other strong programmes, or a credible portfolio-led route.

Salary by stage: Anshul's counselling observation: roughly Rs. 4 to 8 LPA at entry and Rs. 10 to 22 LPA after 4 to 8 years, with field and employer variation.

Employer targets: Product firms, studios, fintech, health-tech and consulting.

Competition and fit: Very high portfolio competition; right for curious students who revise after research.

Communication and brand design

Entry route: Build typography, visual systems, editorial thinking, identity and campaign execution.

Colleges and preparation: Communication-design or visual-communication programmes plus a tightly edited portfolio.

Salary by stage: Anshul's counselling observation: roughly Rs. 5 to 10 LPA at entry and Rs. 14 to 30 LPA after 4 to 8 years, with field and employer variation.

Employer targets: Studios, agencies, media, consumer brands and independent practice.

Competition and fit: Crowded at software level; right for students with visual judgment and narrative skill.

Industrial and product design

Entry route: Combine sketching, ergonomics, materials, CAD, prototyping and manufacturing awareness.

Colleges and preparation: NID, IITs and recognised industrial-design programmes with strong workshops.

Salary by stage: Anshul's counselling observation: roughly Rs. 3 to 7 LPA at entry and Rs. 9 to 20 LPA after 4 to 8 years, with field and employer variation.

Employer targets: Manufacturing, mobility, consumer products, medical devices and studios.

Competition and fit: High entrance and portfolio barrier; right for students who enjoy physical problem solving.

What Changed When the Work Was Tested

A student loved drawing and selected UX because it sounded secure. A user interview and interface task felt draining, while identity work sustained attention, shifting the portfolio toward communication design. This is a composite, anonymised counselling pattern, not a promise about one identifiable student.

Sources and evidence note: NID; UCEED; AptiGuide design pathway. Salary bands labelled as Anshul's counselling observations are planning ranges, not guarantees. Admission, licensing and employment rules can change, so verify current requirements with the named official body before acting.

Build one honest case study before applying

Use this as a decision experiment. Keep the evidence, review what changed and only then commit to a longer course or degree.
