The Full Field
The 9 Psychology Branches This Test Compares
Ask most Class 12 students what a psychology degree leads to and you get one answer: therapist. That's one job. The nine below are genuinely different careers, they hire in different places, they need different degrees, and three of them are legally gated behind a licence the other six are not. A student who would thrive in one can be miserable in another while holding the exact same interest in "understanding people".
Clinical Psychology
Assessment, diagnosis and therapy for mental health conditions, in hospitals, clinics and private practice.
RCI licence required
Counselling Psychology
Talking work with people who are struggling but not clinically ill. The widest hiring net of the nine.
No statutory licence
Industrial-Organisational Psychology
Psychology applied to workplaces: selection, assessment design, performance, culture, attrition.
No statutory licence
School & Educational Psychology
Learning, behaviour and wellbeing inside schools and ed-tech. CBSE's 2026 rules made this a hiring requirement, not a nice-to-have.
No statutory licence
Child & Developmental Psychology
How children develop, and what to do when development goes off-track. Early intervention, child assessment, parent work.
Licence only for clinical diagnosis
Neuropsychology
The brain-behaviour link: cognitive assessment after injury, stroke, epilepsy or dementia. The most research-heavy branch here.
RCI clinical route required
Rehabilitation Psychology
Long-term functioning and independence for people with disability. Steady government and NGO demand.
RCI licence required
Forensic Psychology
Psychology inside the justice system: assessment for courts, prisons, police and forensic science laboratories.
Government exam route
Sports & Exercise Psychology
Performance under pressure, for athletes and teams. Small field, real one, concentrated around SAI and federations.
No statutory licence
Why health psychology is not the tenth option here
Health psychology is a real academic specialisation, and several Indian universities offer it as a track inside an MSc in Psychology. What it does not currently have in India is a hiring pipeline under that job title. The actual work, helping people manage chronic illness, adherence, pain and lifestyle change, gets done inside clinical roles, counselling roles and corporate wellness teams instead. Listing it as a tenth branch would have made this test look more complete and made your result less useful, so it was left out deliberately rather than by oversight. If health psychology is what pulls you, the honest read is that clinical or counselling psychology is the route in, with health as your area of focus inside it.
The Part Nobody Explains
Licensing and Years, Branch by Branch
This is the single most expensive thing students get wrong about psychology. Two branches can look almost identical from the outside and differ by five years of training and a statutory licence. Clinical psychology is a legally gated profession in India: you cannot register with the Rehabilitation Council of India, or lawfully practise as a clinical psychologist, without a degree RCI recognises for that exact programme at that exact institution. Counselling is the opposite, "counsellor" is not a protected title under Indian law and there is no statutory register at all, which is why the quality of the course you pick matters more there, not less.
Two things changed recently and both are worth knowing before you pick a college. First, following UGC and RCI notifications, 2025-26 was the final admission session for the M.Phil in Clinical Psychology at most institutions. It is being replaced by a two-year RCI-regulated Master of Clinical Psychology, entered after a four-year Psychology honours degree or a three-year degree plus a bridge year. NIMHANS Bengaluru started admitting to its own version from July 2026. Second, rehabilitation psychology is moving the same way, to a two-year Master in Rehabilitation Psychology from the 2026-27 session, but that one still sits on top of a full MA or MSc in Psychology, which is why its total runway is longer than clinical's, not shorter. If clinical or rehabilitation is where you land, read our detailed guide to RCI-recognised clinical psychology colleges and the new MA pathway before you shortlist anywhere.

Methodology
How This Test Works, And What It Deliberately Is Not
Every branch is scored against the same ten interest dimensions: therapeutic one-to-one work, formal assessment and diagnosis, research and data, organisational and workplace systems, group and systemic work, child development, the legal and justice system, brain and biology, sport and performance, and disability and rehabilitation. Those interest scores are then weighted against four practical constraints you tell us about directly: your quantitative and research comfort, your honest tolerance for emotionally heavy one-to-one work, how many years of further study you can realistically commit to, and whether a statutory licence with limited seats is something you're willing to take on or something you'd rather avoid.
That last pair does real work. Interest alone would send almost everyone to clinical psychology, because it's the branch students have heard of. Weighting interest against the runway is what separates a student who genuinely belongs in a six-to-seven year licensed clinical path from one whose interests are nearly identical but who would be far better served by counselling, school or I-O psychology at a two-year postgraduate cost.
Nothing is hard-coded as the default winner. The scoring engine was run against a synthetic profile built to favour each of the nine branches in turn, and every branch won the top spot for its own profile. Where two branches genuinely suit a similar profile, like clinical and counselling, or school and child psychology, the test asks a direct follow-up question rather than guessing, and any exact tie is broken with a fair random shuffle rather than silently defaulting to whichever branch happens to be listed first.
What this is not: it is not a psychometric instrument, not a diagnostic tool, and not a mental health screen of any kind. That distinction is stated more firmly here than on our other tests for an obvious reason, the subject is psychology, and a career quiz about psychology should not be mistaken for a psychological assessment. Nothing on this page evaluates your mental health, and nothing on this page should be read as if it does. If you want a validated interest instrument covering whole career clusters rather than branches inside one, AptiGuide's free career aptitude test uses the RIASEC framework and is the better starting point.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About This Test
Is this psychology branch test a clinical or psychological assessment?
No, and this matters more here than on any other test we run, because the subject itself is psychology. This is a career fit tool built on interest weighting and practical constraints. It is not a psychometric instrument, not a diagnostic screen, not a mental health assessment, and it says nothing at all about your mental health. It cannot detect, indicate or rule out any condition. If you are looking for a mental health assessment, that is a separate thing entirely and it belongs with a qualified professional, not with a free web page.
Which psychology branches does this test compare?
Nine: clinical psychology, counselling psychology, industrial-organisational psychology, school and educational psychology, child and developmental psychology, neuropsychology, rehabilitation psychology, forensic psychology, and sports and exercise psychology. These were chosen because each one has a genuinely distinct entry route, work setting and hiring pipeline in India, not just a distinct name in a textbook.
Why is health psychology not one of the nine branches?
Health psychology is a real academic specialisation and several Indian universities offer it inside an MSc Psychology. What it does not currently have in India is a distinct hiring pipeline under that job title. The work shows up inside clinical roles, counselling roles and corporate wellness teams instead. Adding it as a tenth option would have made the test look more complete while making the result less useful, so it was left out on purpose rather than by oversight.
Do I need RCI registration to work in psychology in India?
Only for some branches. RCI registration on the Central Rehabilitation Register is legally required to practise as a clinical psychologist, and it is required for most government rehabilitation psychology posts. Counselling, industrial-organisational, school and educational, and sports psychology have no statutory register in India, and "counsellor" is not a protected title under Indian law. That difference changes your timeline by years, which is why this test asks about it directly instead of treating every branch as equally easy to enter.
Is the M.Phil in Clinical Psychology still the route to becoming a clinical psychologist?
No, not for new applicants. Following UGC and RCI notifications, 2025-26 was the final admission session for the M.Phil in Clinical Psychology at most institutions, and it is being replaced by a two-year RCI-regulated Master of Clinical Psychology (M.Clin.Psy.), entered after a four-year Psychology honours degree or a three-year degree plus a bridge year. NIMHANS Bengaluru began admitting to its own M.Clin.Psy. programme from July 2026. Students already enrolled in an M.Phil are not affected.
Can I take this test if I am in Class 11 or 12 and have not started a psychology degree yet?
Yes, and that is the best time to take it. Psychology is open from PCB, PCM, Commerce and Humanities alike, a science background is not compulsory for the standard BA or BSc route. Only the newer four-year BSc Psychology honours route asks for Biology in Classes 11 and 12 at some universities. Knowing which branch pulls you before you pick a college changes which degree and which entrance you should be aiming at.
Why does the test ask how many years of further study I am willing to do?
Because in psychology this is a genuine differentiator, not a nice-to-have. Counselling, I-O and school psychology need roughly two years of postgraduate study. Clinical psychology needs a specific RCI-recognised master's plus registration. Rehabilitation psychology needs a master's on top of a master's. Neuropsychology realistically runs eight to ten years from Class 12. Two students with identical interests can belong in different branches purely because one can commit to that runway and one cannot.
Is forensic psychology really a career in India, or just a television idea?
It is real, but narrower than the shows suggest. Recruitment happens mostly through broader government forensic-science routes, at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, state forensic science laboratories, police departments and the National Forensic Sciences University, which has advertised posts in forensic psychology specifically. A dedicated "forensic psychologist" cadre is rare. It ranks as a genuine option here, with the entry route stated honestly rather than dressed up.
Is this test free?
Yes. It takes about 8 minutes, gives you an instant top match and a runner-up comparison, and involves no payment. If you are not yet sure psychology is the right field at all,
AptiGuide's free career aptitude test is the better place to start, since it compares whole career clusters rather than branches inside one of them.
Can AptiGuide help me plan the route into the branch I match with?
Yes. A match tells you a direction. A 1:1 session with Anshul Wadhwa turns it into a plan: which degree and which entrance to target, whether your shortlist actually carries the recognition the branch needs, and how to sequence the licensing years so you are not surprised by them in your final year of college.
