Commerce subject choice

Core, Applied or no maths: choose your subject

Use your own maths attempts and preferences to choose a subject and get a practical next step.

Start with your school situation

Paper ready; no calculator or help. Skip unfamiliar problems. 5–7 minutes; contact details required for your result.

Indicative only: based on your answers, not a final decision, prediction or guarantee. Please do not decide on this alone.

Choose the maths you will actually study

Core and Applied are different subject choices. Commerce without Mathematics is also a real choice, with specific routes you give up. Your result combines your own attempts, the work you want to practise and your course direction.

There are thirteen questions plus your class selector: eight problems to show more than a single lucky answer, and five short questions about your goal, board, school, preference and time. Allow five to seven minutes, longer if you want to work carefully.

What the CBSE courses contain

Core Mathematics includes algebra, functions, geometry and calculus. Applied Mathematics also includes algebra and calculus, with financial mathematics and data work. Applied does not mean “no algebra”, and this quiz does not rank one course as universally easier.

Under DU’s 2026–27 rules, Economics (Hons.), BMS and BBA(FIA) specify Mathematics/Applied Mathematics. B.Com includes combinations without maths; B.Com (Hons.) includes an Accountancy/Book Keeping route. Those are examples from one university, not rules for every B.Com or BBA.

Use the official programme page for your campus and admission year. Check this exact line: “Required Class XII subjects and CUET combination; whether Applied Mathematics is accepted”. Your Class 12 admission year may have different rules.

How to use the recommendation

Read the choice first, then the reasons from your attempts. A mistake gives you a practice topic, not a permanent ability label. Only a strong conflict between your preferred work and the mini-test leads to the three-day trial. That result still names a current lean and tells you what would change it.

If your school cannot offer the recommended subject, the result says so. School permission and deadlines belong in the short “Before you switch” box. They do not replace your subject recommendation.

For parents

Let the student solve the problems. Help with understanding the question format, not with choosing an answer. If you answered alone, use the result to start a conversation and let the student redo the quiz before acting on it.

Common questions about choosing maths

Common questions

Is Applied Mathematics free of algebra?

No. CBSE’s Applied syllabus includes algebra and calculus as well as financial mathematics and statistics.

Does Economics always require Core?

No universal rule is claimed here. DU’s 2026–27 Economics (Hons.) combination accepts Mathematics/Applied Mathematics. Check your exact university and programme.

Can I take B.Com without maths?

DU’s 2026–27 B.Com combinations include routes without Mathematics. B.Com (Hons.) also has an Accountancy/Book Keeping combination. The full combination and other conditions still apply.

Can I take BBA without maths?

It depends on the exact BBA. CHRIST’s undated general table lists a Class XII pass for BBA without a separate maths condition in that row. DU’s BBA(FIA) specifies Mathematics/Applied Mathematics. Check your programme, campus and admission year.

What about CA?

The cited ICAI Foundation FAQ lists entry conditions without naming Class XII Mathematics as a prerequisite; confirm the rules for your attempt. Foundation includes Business Mathematics and Statistics, so you still need to practise quantitative work.

What happens if I skip a problem?

A skipped topic is untested. Your result describes that topic as untested. If you skip everything, it gives a current lean and lets you revisit just the equation, percentage and table questions.

Can a Class 9 student use this?

Yes, as a future subject plan. Some Class 10 topics may be new to you. Use Skip for those and revisit after you have studied them.

What if my school offers only one option?

Where your attempts support the offered alternative, the recommendation uses it. Otherwise it names the subject fit and tells you that your school cannot currently offer it. If you studied Basic Mathematics, tell your school and ask what it permits for senior secondary registration.

Why would I get the trial?

Only when your preferred kind of maths and your attempts strongly conflict. You get five actual problems, a three-day schedule, worked answers and a rule for choosing after the redo.

Do I need counselling to use the answer?

No. The recommendation, weekly plan and worksheet are complete on the page. Optional help appears after them.

How we made this
Eight original maths problems and five preference, goal and school questions inform the subject recommendation. The decision rules are editorial guidance. Course examples come from the saved official sources below. A parent-only response needs the student’s own attempts. The thirteen-question format keeps eight practice samples and five decision constraints; allow five to seven minutes.

This result is indicative. It is based only on the answers you gave. It is not professional advice, an admission or job prediction, or a guarantee of any outcome. Treat it as one input. Before you decide, check eligibility, fees and requirements with the institution, and talk to your parents or guardian and a qualified counsellor. The decision, and its outcome, remain yours. AptiGuide is not liable for decisions made on this result alone.
